Parish Organization and Programs

 

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

            Closed meetings are held every Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the Panorama Room.

 

 B.A.S.I.C. (Brothers and Sisters in Christ) – the Adult Club
President: Pandora (Pam) Stevenson

            Meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays at 7:00 pm in the First Portable

             A ministry composed of both single and married young adults, ranging in age from 30 to 50, who are looking to enhance their spiritual growth, bring about positive changes in their social environment, and have an active role in the continuing success of  the programs  and events that Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish provides its parishioners.  

            They sponsor a program or event at least once a quarter.  Their goal is to bring about a sense of pride and teamwork amongst all OLPH Ministries through working together on  several projects.

 

Blessed Virgin Sodality (BVS)
            Prefect: Eva Galloway

            Meetings are held on the first Sunday at 9:30 am in the First Portable. 
           
Leads others to Christ through devotion to the Blessed Mother.  The Sodality encourages devotion to Mary through the rosary, a day of recollection and annual prayer breakfast.  The Sodality also provides Scholarships for students attending Catholic High Schools.

            The Blessed Virgin Mary “Junior” Sodality comes under the direction of this  Organization.

 

Cursillo
            Chairperson: Rose Thurston

            Meetings are held the fourth (4th) Friday at 7:30 pm in the School.

 Cursillo is a Worldwide Evangelical movement of the Catholic Church, which started in Spain.   Its name is Spanish meaning “short course in Christianity”.  Its purpose is to make it possible for people to:

1)      Understand what it means to live in union with Christ and bring others into that union
2)
      Discover and fulfill one’s personal vocation
3)
      Become active in a Christian group that supports each other, and
4)
      Understand how to transform their environments.

Cursillo has a Secretariat that reports to the Archdiocese of Washington, DC.  There are ten groups meeting at various churches within the Archdiocese.  They meet at specified times throughout the month at gatherings called “Ultreyas” which means “onward in your faith journey”.  Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church is a part of the East of the River Ultreya, which includes four surrounding churches: OLPH, Assumption, St. Thomas More, and St. Francis Xavier.

The Hilltoppers
            President: Benjamin Contee, Sr.

            Assistant: Lucie Shepherd

            Meetings are held every Tuesday (September through June) from 11:30 am until 6:00 pm in the Panorama Room.   This is an ecumenical group of senior citizens, who participate in Mass, share lunch and socialize.

 

Knights of St. John International (Men, Ladies, Junior Ladies) St. Paul’s Commandery No.286
            President: William Holley

            Meetings are held the fourth (4th) Sunday at 1:30 pm in the First Portable.

This is a fraternal organization of men created under the Knights of St. John International, the leading most prominent semi-military Catholic organization in the United States.  The Knights contribute their services to many religious, civic, and social activities.  They escort the Cardinal or Bishop at religious occasions, and newly ordained priest when they are about to celebrate their first Solemn High Mass.  The Knights serve at Labor Day Mass sponsor an annual Memorial Day and Commemoration Mass, and attend biennial joint conventions with the Ladies’ Auxiliaries, the annual convention with the Baltimore/Washington Grand, and provide scholarships for students.

                   

St. Joseph’s Ladies’ Auxiliary No.213
         President: Kelly S. Tucker

            Attends the 8:00 am Mass on the third (3rd) Sundays with regular meetings immediately following at 9:30 am in the First Portable.

             A fraternal organization, created under the Knights of St. John International, the ladies practice Christian values and principles in their devotion to the Blessed Mother.  The Auxiliary assists the needy, provides scholarships to young ladies attending Catholic High School; participates in biennial joint conventions with the Knights; the annual Baltimore/Washington Grand convention; attend Mother’s Day Mass at the Shrine; has an annual Memorial Mass for their deceased; and oversees the Junior Auxiliary.

 

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Junior Auxiliary No.67

            Meetings are held on the first (1st) Sunday at 9:30 am in the Second Portable.

            A breakfast is sponsored every second (2nd) Sunday as a fund-raising activity.  This is a fraternal organization created under the direction of St. Joseph’s Ladies’ Auxiliary No.213 to the Knights of St. John International.  With the Blessed Mother as their model,  the Organization teaches Christian values, principles, and sisterly love.  Young ladies between the ages of  8 and 18 participate in a biennial convention with the Knights and Ladies; participate in various local activities with eight other Junior Auxiliaries in the Washington, DC and Maryland areas.  OLPH Junior Auxiliary has a drill team who competes in competition at the Conventions.  OLPH Junior Auxiliary also participates in OLPH Youth Ministry sponsored activities.

 

Ladies of Charity

            Meetings are held quarterly or as needed.

The Ladies of Charity (LOC) is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Association of International Charities and is an active member of the Archdiocese  of Washington Ladies of Charity. 

 This organization strives for social justice by helping the needy in a spirit of humility, simplicity and charity which follows the works of its founders St. Vincent DePaul and St. Louise DeMarillac.

Members attend the Annual National Assembly conventions with the Ladies of Charity of the United States of America (L.C.U.S.A.). 

The LOC is involved in both direct and indirect services to the needy.  Fundraisers are given annually to help fund the services provided to the less fortunate in the parish and surrounding East of the River Anacostia community. 

These services include providing emergency aid to families in need; food for the needy; maintaining the food pantry; visiting the sick (hospitals, nursing homes and/or homebound); sponsoring students in need; sponsoring needy children to attend camp during summer vacation; and, providing over 120 baskets of food and distributing gifts to needy families at Christmas.

 Men’s Club
       President: James King

            Meetings are held on the second (2nd) Tuesday at 7:30 pm in the Panorama Room.

             The Men’s Club grew from the Holy Name Society.  It is an ecumenical group of men who come
 together for spiritual and social growth.  The Men’s Club gives fund-raising activities; and provides
            scholarships for students attending Catholic high schools.

 

Men’s Ministry
            Coordinator: Warren Newton

            Meetings are held on the third (3rd) Sundays after the 11:00 am Mass in the School

 This is an open discussion-meeting group.  All men ages eighteen (18) and older, regardless of religious background or the lack of, may participate.  Discussions within the meetings are confidential.  Our mission is to utilize the gifts and talents of individuals and to bring all closer to God and in some cases, introduce the Word of God to others.

             

Self-Awareness Group

Confidential meetings are held on Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in the First (1st) Portable.  Perquisite: Interview.

This is a support group where people can come together to discuss their problems and situations under a safe and confidential environment.  Provides crisis intervention, support services, retreats for youth, family, and substance abuse.  The group participants help each other work through life challenges, and networking.

 

SHARE (Self-Help and Resource Exchange)

            Food is distributed on the fourth (4th) Saturday in the Panorama Room.

            This is a nonprofit food and community network, of which OLPH is a host site.  This program is organized primarily for the OLPH Senior Citizens community; however all are welcome to participate.

 

Washington Interfaith Network (WIN)
     OLPH Representatives: Benjamin Contee, Sr.

      and Timothy Tilghman  

             WIN is a broad-based organization comprised of faith-based institutions in the City.  WIN works through teams of leaders at member institutions to develop a vision to improve the quality of life for all in the City.  WIN has worked to build affordable housing for city residents, complete priority maintenance and capital improvements in all DC public schools, and has focused energy on public safety and living wages for City residents.  The key to WIN’s power is the committed team of leaders at each member institution, which engages in local actions to improve the quality of life in the  surrounding community.  Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church is one of WIN’s member institutions.

 

 Youth Ministry
Director: Fr. Sidney O. Speaks, SSJ

                      A Ministry focused on the Parish and community youth.  It enables the youth to come to know and love Jesus more, to embrace their Catholic faith, and to develop their talents in the service to their family, Parish, and community.  Youth are encouraged to share and have open discussions and to fellowship with each other.

             This Ministry responds to the needs of youth by: religious teachings, athletic programs, community            service programs, feeding the hungry, recreational activities, and programs to enhance their spiritual, cultural and social lives.

             Youth groups include: CCD, Altar Servers, Liturgical Dance Ministry, Ministers of Hospitality,  Youth Choir, Youth Lectors, CYO Boys/Girls Athletics, OLPH Junior Auxiliary NO.67, and the Blessed Virgin Mary Junior Sodality.

             Meetings of youth leaders are called as needed by the Youth Ministry Coordinator.
